Geographic Information System is used as network inventory and infrastructure management tool in the access network. It does not only correctly represents the network elements in the form of maps, but also captures all attribute data of the elements and is therefore able to generate reports. This is important and useful in managing network resources and planning for network expansion in places where resources are running low. Using GIS site engineers are also assisted in localizing faults that may be a result of equipment failure or cable damage and hence significantly reduce downtime since the database query eliminates the need for field engineers to trace cables on site. GIS provides all the information required in fixing faults as it gives a detailed report of all equipment pots that are used for the provisioning of service to subscribers. The GIS system also shows location of equipment and other network infrastructure. It was observed that the use of GIS in the network not only facilitate quick access to network information, but it also aid resource allocation and management. This has the overall effect of improved services delivery to the subscriber and increase in revenue generated by the network operator.
